§ 4-28. Impoundment, disposal of dog not inoculated or registered as required; redemption by owner.

  • All dogs or animals of the canine species found in the town over the age of two (2) months at any time which have not been inoculated and registered with the parish health department shall be seized and held for a period of seven (7) days or until a veterinarian visits the pound, whichever period is longer, during which time the owner or keeper of such animal may claim same after having the animal duly inoculated and registered as provided herein and paying the registration and inoculation fee as herein provided, together with an impounding fee of sixteen dollars ($16.00). Provided, however, if such animal is not claimed within seven (7) days after it is seized and impounded and the requirements of this article are not complied with, it shall be the duty of the parish health officer or other official or person by him appointed to humanely destroy such animal or sell such animal at public or private sale.

    The owner of any dog that has been impounded and sold to another person shall be entitled to claim said animal within thirty (30) days after the sale, provided that all fees and cost of maintenance are reimbursed to the new owner.
