§ 8-27. Fire chief.

  • (a)

    The head of the fire department shall be the fire chief who shall be appointed by the mayor, with council approval, in accordance with the Charter of the Town of Berwick.

    (b)

    The fire chief shall direct and be responsible for, subject to the direction of the mayor:

    (1)

    Fire prevention.

    (2)

    Fire extinguishment and salvage operations.

    (3)

    Inspections and recommendations concerning the fire code.

    (4)

    Investigation of fires and their causes.

    (5)

    Conduct of a fire safety and prevention program.

    (6)

    Operation of fire stations.

    (7)

    Selection, training and management of fire personnel.

    (8)

    Submission of fire department budget for approval of the mayor and town council.

    (9)

    Enforcement of rules, regulations and procedures of the fire department.

    (10)

    Custody, care and management of buildings, fire apparatus, hose and all other property and equipment assigned to the fire department.

    (11)

    Commander-in-chief of the entire volunteer fire personnel of the Berwick Volunteer Fire Department.

    (12)

    Other duties or activities as may be directed by the mayor.

    (c)

    When present at fires the fire chief shall be in supreme command, shall have full charge of all forces and apparatus to be used for the extinguishment of fires, and shall have full power and control of the town fire department.
